Classic Game Characters in Spore

I came accross this over at 1up.com. Apparently Pacman and other videogame characters are inspiring Spore creature makers.

Spore, the next and arguably most ambitious project from Sims mastermind Will Wright, has a sneak preview of sorts with the recently-released Spore Creature Creator. Although only one piece of the total Spore experience, players have quickly taken to creating their own cuddly creatures, creepy crawlies, and abominations. Aside from penisaurs, the first thought to a lot of gamers was to pay homage to their favorite games and franchises with their creations.

HD DVD dropped by Wal-Mart, Toshiba?

It's been a rough year for Toshiba's HD DVD format. After spending 2006 and 2007 locked in a heated battle with the Sony-backed Blu-ray for high-definition, high-capacity disc format dominance, HD DVD has suffered a series of devastating setbacks in the first two months of the year.

Warner Bros. kicked 2008 off by going Blu-ray exclusive in the first week of January. An apparently panicked HD DVD camp canceled its Consumer Electronics Show conference in response, and reports quickly surfaced that HD DVD holdouts Paramount and Universal were looking to switch to Blu-ray.

Bad news for HD DVD fans is continuing to snowball this week, as Best Buy and movie rental service Netflix both said they would back the Sony-supported format going forward. (Best Buy will still stock HD DVD, but its salespeople will advise prospective customers to go Blu-ray).

Two more big names came up as abandoning HD DVD today. This morning the official Wal-Mart blog confirmed that the massive retail chain is going Blu-ray exclusive by June, and the Hollywood Reporter is citing "reliable industry sources" for the news that Toshiba itself is ready to drop its own format.

A Toshiba representative denied the news to the film-focused trade newspaper, but left plenty of room for people to infer there is some truth to the report.

"Given the market developments in the past month," the rep is quoted as saying, "Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of our recent price reductions on all HD DVD players."

A source "close to the HD-DVD camp" told the paper that an announcement could be made in a matter of weeks, but that it is definitely coming soon.

Stray Bullet's first game chambered

Shadowbane developer's new home announces first project, an MMO based on an original IP.

When a developer from the then-recently shuttered Wolfpack Studios announced the formation of Stray Bullet Games last May, he said the company's first new game would not be a sequel to Wolfpack's Shadowbane, but more likely it would be an original offering.

That has finally been confirmed, as Stray Bullet Games announced that it has begun development on a new massively multiplayer online game based on an original intellectual property. No specific platforms were announced for the game.

"With this new project, Stray Bullet is committed to creating a fully realized, ongoing online conflict that combines furious action with tactical and strategic game play," the company said. "In the game to come, characters, guilds, and global factions will engage in meaningful, exciting, and fun mass combat."

Stray Bullet has said it won't release more details on the game for a while, but it did say it would not be creating its own game engine; instead, it would rely on middleware to get the job done whenever possible.

Hippo writes "Will Wright's "Spore" was introduced to the public over a year ago, with SCREENSHOTS, a complete ARTICLE on Gamespy, and an hour long VIDEO of Will Wright's presentation.

If you haven't seen those yet, the items in bold are also links to the content, and all three are worthy of checking out.

Three new videos were released this week for E3, including a video of GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE. Also, at the end of a Spore review article from E3 on GAMESPOT, there are more screenshots, a video of Will Wright's 17 minute presentation at E3, and a brand new offical trailor.

It looks like this is the future of computer gaming technology."

Revolution's real name

It was a codename after all. Nintendo's just announced the new identity of the console previously known as Revolution - it's called Nintendo Wii.

Yes, we're not quite sure we believe it either, but it's there for all to see at revolution.nintendo.com - complete with a message explaining Nintendo's thought process, which you can read below.

"While the code-name 'Revolution' expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else," says Nintendo.

"Wii will put people more in touch with their games ... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean? Wii sounds like 'we', which emphasises this console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

"Wii has a distinctive 'ii' spelling that symbolises both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.

"So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because, it's not really about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything."

So then. Nintendo Wii. About which we'll hear a great deal more at E3.

Judge blocks California game law

Schwarzenegger-signed age-restriction measure slapped with injunction; ESA and IEMA elated.

In November, a judge ruled a Michigan law banning the sale of mature-rated games to minors as unconstitutional, preventing it from going into effect. Three weeks ago, a similar fate befell an Illinois measure that would have placed similar restrictions on games.

Late yesterday, a California judge issued a ruling that prevented that state's own game-restriction law from going into effect. In the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, Judge Ronald Whyte slapped a preliminary injunction on a law signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, himself the star of several games, last month.

In his ruling, Judge Whyte wrote that "games are protected by the First Amendment"--worthy of the same protection of free expression as books, films, television, or the press. He granted the preliminary injunction on the grounds that the terms of the law, which would include mandatory labeling of games deemed unsuitable for minors, would "likely" be ruled unconstitutional. The law was slated to go into effect on January 1, 2006.

Square-Enix has recently confirmed to Eurogamer.net that forthcoming PS2 sequel Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King will come bundled with a Final Fantasy XII demo over in the States - and hinted that we might get it, too.

"We can't confirm that the demo will also come with Dragon Quest 8 in Europe at the moment," a spokesperson told us.

"But we'd love to do it," he added - so let's hope they get their wish.

The spokesperson also confirmed that Europe will get the "international version" of Dragon Quest 8 rather than the Japanese one - so you can expect voiceovers, a proper soundtrack by a proper orchestra, a newly designed GUI menu system, new battle abilities and better animations.

Dragon Quest 8 is due out on the same day as the Xbox 360 in the US - November 22 - but there's no word yet on when it will arrive here. Final Fantasy XII will launch in Japan on March 16, with US and European versions to follow later in the year.
