Nintendo had 30 Wii Wheel prototypes

Get some plastic, shape it into a circle, cut out a slot for the Wii Remote, and bam, out comes a Wii Wheel. As it would turn out, Nintendo's driving peripheral that will be integral to Mario Kart Wii required a bit more thought to get just right. Actually, a lot more thought. In Nintendo's most recent "Ask Iwata" developer interview, Wii Wheel lead designer Kenichiro Ashida explains that the device went through around 30 iterations before finalization.

Wii Wheels's seen here

"While we were making prototypes like these, we went through a process of trial and error," explained Ashida. "With regard to weight, we thought carefully about how many grams would best suit gameplay. When considering durability, we wanted to make something strong using thick materials, but increasing the weight by even 30 grams would have been considered too heavy for some people. We eventually designed it to be as light as possible so people could use it for a long time without getting tired too quickly."

Weight and durability weren't the only factors Ashida and his team grappled with in the wheels design. Concerns spanned from where it would be best to house the wheel to how to best accommodate button positioning to whether the shape should be circular or rectangular.

Miyamoto, who was also party to the "Ask Iwata" interview, succinctly summarized Ashida's process, saying, "It costs a lot, so we needed it to do a lot of work!"

Wii online capabilities suffer another 300% knock-out

GoNintendo has posted the following official statement from Nintendo regarding the online problems with Brawl:

"As with the launch of any online-enabled game, especially one as popular as Super Smash Bros. Brawl, everyone wants to play at once. This puts a strain on the pipeline. We have seen improvements in online play performance every day since launch."

So Nintendo's solution seems to be, "Less people should play our game." And if the online problems persist, that will almost certainly be the case. Brilliant.

Nintendo rules out Wii price cut, unveils game-gifting

Two weeks ago, Nintendo of America's outgoing senior vice president George Harrison said his company wasn't planning to cut the price of the Wii. The news wasn't surprising, since NOA president and CEO Reggie Fils-Aime previously promised the console would be in short supply through next year. However, since both executives' statements, the next-gen console war has heated up. Last week, Sony unveiled a new $399 PlayStation 3 and Microsoft touted the $279 Xbox Live Arcade as a direct Wii competitor.

Will Nintendo retaliate by cutting the price of the Wii? The short answer: No. In Japan, Nintendo Co. president Satoru Iwata told the Associated Press that the console's cost will remain unchanged in all territories. "We're still focusing on how to meet booming demand," he explained. "We're absolutely not considering a price cut."

Though Iwata's comments weren't exactly shocking, Nintendo did have one surprise up its sleeve. Also today in Japan, the company unveiled a new channel for its console which will allow Wii owners to give Virtual Console games to one another as gifts.

"We think this will be a breakthrough in encouraging customers to spread news of fun games via word of mouth," Iwata told the AP. "We also hope to spur more users to connect their Wiis to the Internet." Such statements stand in stark contrast to Iwata's position during the GameCube era, where he said that consumers were averse to consoles with online functionalities.

Unfortunately, no further information on the Wii game-gift channel was available as of press time. Nintendo of America reps said they had no further details, but urged Nintendo fans to "stay tuned."

In an interview with IGN, RedOctane's co-founder and president Kai Huang has confirmed that the Wii version of Guitar Hero III uses a guitar peripheral and has online elements.

Guitar Hero III is scheduled to hit PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii in Autumn this year. However, many were left wondering whether the Wii version would require a guitar peripheral - like previous Guitar Hero titles - or utilise the console's Wiimote.

While the development team is still exploring innovative ways to use the remote, Kai Huang told us: "We are really excited about the Wii game because there are so many options for the Wii remote. However, you will play the game with a guitar peripheral and it will be similar to a guitar you've seen in the past."

He also confirmed that Guitar Hero III on Wii contains features included in other versions of the upcoming game - such as online play and downloadable music.

Wii sells out across Japan

TOKYO--While North America had its Nintendo Wii launch almost two weeks ago, Japan finally came in for its share of Wii madness this weekend. Some 400,000 units of the console were available on the console's December 2 launch day, with 600,000 more units slated to ship in Japan by the end of the year. However, given the large amount of interest in the console--which Nintendo has flogged with a TV-ad blitz for the past two months--demand is expected to be much higher than supply.

Trying to pre-order a Wii online was no simple feat for Japanese gamers. Amazon Japan made multiple preorders offers for the console, but they all sold out in a matter of minutes. Other online stores including Tsutaya, Toys "R" Us Online, and 7Dream (a division of 7-Eleven Japan) staged similarly short-lived preorders. Yodobashi Online was one of the rare major shops that took preorders without any prior announcement, but even there, units sold out within an hour.

Preordering a Wii offline also turned out to be difficult. Major electronic chain outlets including Bic Camera, Sofmap, and Laox secured enough Wii units to accept preorders last month, most of which sold out in a day. Still, savvy consumers could preorder a Wii as late as a week before its launch--if they knew where to look. Kojima electronics ran ads through newspapers and took preorders at locations nationwide last Saturday, sending many happy customers home with a reservation.

Last night, customers who missed out on a preorder crowded around most major electronic outlets in Tokyo. As reported earlier, the Shinjuku and Akihabara Yodobashi Camera had drawn over 1,000 people in line by 10 p.m. That's when employees handed out tickets in order to control the lines. By contrast, the Shinjuku Bic Camera had a line of over 400 people at midnight, and it continued to grow through to dawn.

To check out how the lines had developed during the last couple of hours leading up to launch, GameSpot once again made its way to the streets of Tokyo, this time starting out in Yurakucho, where Bic Camera's main branch is located. At 5 a.m., the store had a line of 1,200 people that snaked along the sidewalk for street blocks. An employee at the end of the line assured customers that that there were still plenty of Wiis still available.

Once the morning trains started running, more and more people began to line up. By 5:40 a.m., store employees capped the line at around 1,500 people. Many of those waiting were obviously hardcore gamers, with many playing games on their DS Lite. One avid fan engaged in a bit of cosplay in a homemade Wii-mote costume made out of cardboard.

Back in Shinjuku, about 400 people lined up by 6:30 a.m. at the Sakuraya electronic store. At the store's east branch, one employee was already holding up a "sold out" sign as last-minute customers formed a long line that extended out toward the east exit of Shinjuku station.

The line at Shinjuku Bic Camera was around 400 people when at midnight, but by 6:40 a.m. it had grown to nearly double the size. As was the cast at other stores, employees were holding up "sold out" signs before the store had even opened.

Between 700-800 people lined up at the Yodobashi Camera's main game branch in Shinjuku, about the same number which waited for the PS3 two weeks ago. Unlike other shops, Yodobashi was selling Wii games on a first-come, first-served basis, so eager customers showed up early so as not to miss out on their favorite titles. Unsurprisingly, the first person in line bought The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess together with his Wii.

As was the case with the PlayStation 3 launch, customers that tried to get in the Yodobashi Camera's line after 6 or 7 a.m. were turned away. But as a last resort, many could be spotted rushing off to the smaller Akihabara stores that were holding raffles to decide who got a Wii. At East Shinjuku Yodobashi Camera, a smaller branch with fewer units, over 350 customers were lined up at 7 a.m. hoping that lady luck would be on their side.

Nintendo will reshape the home entertainment and video game landscape with the launch of its heralded Wii™ home video game console. Wii will go on sale in the Americas on November 19th and Japan on December 2nd - European launch date, price and software line up will be announced at a press conference in London tomorrow (Friday 15th).

Wii will be sold as an affordable, mass-consumer product at an MSRP in the US of just $249.99. The price includes one wireless Wii Remote controller, one Nunchuk™ controller and the groundbreaking collection of five different Wii Sports games on one disc, which anyone can play using simple physical movements, experienced or not.

Every Wii console will include another distinctive feature: a series of on-screen “channels” that make up the Wii Channel Menu, which makes the console approachable and customizable for everyone, from the most avid gamer to people who have never played before. The Wii Channel Menu is the starting point for all of the console’s functions. The “channels” offer a gateway to a rich variety of entertainment options. When connected to a TV, the Wii Channel Menu offers a simple interface letting users pick games to play, get news or weather, upload and send photos or even create playable caricatures of themselves to use in actual games. The variety of options available through the Wii Channel Menu motivates both gamers and non-gamers to turn on Wii’s power every day.

Wii is creating worldwide excitement with its unique control system, an inventive, first-of-its-kind controller whose position can be detected in a 3-D space. The new controller allows users pinpoint target in games or move through the Wii Channel Menu with precision and ease. This intuitive control system will be understood immediately by everyone, regardless of their previous experience with video games. With this one small controller, Wii makes games both easier and more intense than anything previously experienced. For example, in the Wii Sports tennis game players swing the Wii Remote like a racket to hit the ball, as in real life. They can add topspin or slice the ball just by angling their hands and wrist like they would in a real match.

While speaking on a panel at the Ziff Davis Electronic Games Summit in Napa earlier today, Ubisoft North America President Laurent Detoc revealed that his company currently has seven titles in development for Nintendo's upcoming Wii platform. This show of support came as a surprise to many, as the company had previously only demonstrated two of those seven titles: Rayman Raving Rabbids and Red Steel. Detoc praised the Wii several times during the panel, stating that he expects it to have "a large audience and market." He also stated that he personally felt that in a time when fewer and fewer games appeal to him, the Wii offers plenty of enjoyment. "The first time I picked up that sucker I couldn't stop playing it."

On the same panel, Midway President David Zucker stated that his company has six titles in development for the Wii.

ATI exec talks Wii chip

ATI executive John Swinimer has declared that the full capabilities of the Nintendo Wii have yet to be revealed, since we've only been given a taster of what the machine can do so far.

Speaking to GameDaily, Swinimer said: "I think what you saw [at E3] was just the tip of the iceberg of what the Hollywood chip can bring to the Nintendo Wii."

However, he declined to talk tech, stating: "I really don't think that it's about the [specs]; I think it's about the innovation that it brings to the table - the motion-sensing, the always-on capability, which is really cool too - the fact that the chip is powerful enough and responsive enough to be there at a moment's notice.

"I think that's pretty cool for the average gamer," he added.

Swinimer was hesitant to discuss how the Wii's Hollywood chip squares up to the Xbox 360 GPU, which ATI is also responsible for: "They're different chips for different platforms and different uses. I don't think it's a fair comparison to put them on a chart. That's not what it's all about."

"I think if you focus on the capabilities that the chip will have for the average consumer, with the amazement and wow factor, I think that's the value that we bring."

Swinimer did confirm that ATI has been working very closely with Nintendo, and that "The team that worked on this chip also worked on the Flipper chip that was in GameCube. They've been working with Nintendo for a very long time so there's a great chemistry with the two teams working together."

Exactly how the Wii will compare to the GameCube in terms of power is not yet known. However, some developers estimate that the new console will run at around four times the speed of its predecessor, once both the CPU and GPU are factored in. More conservative estimates suggest the Wii will run at around double the speed of the GameCube.
