First UT3 User Mods Released For PS3

Epic Games has released its first round of user-created content for the PlayStation 3 version of Unreal Tournament 3.

The multiplayer map called DM-Shrine, created by Nottingham, England, resident Thomas Browett (aka Setheran) can be downloaded onto a PC, copied onto a PS3-readable memory device and uploaded to your system.

The map was originally created for the PC version of the game and "cooked" by Epic for the PS3. According to Epic president Mark Rein, who posted the announcement on the Epic forums last night, the company hasn't edited the content but simply reformatted the code to run on the console.

"We're waiting on some paperwork from Sony that will allow us to release an editor update so mod creators can do this cook process for themselves," Rein said. "We expect to have that very soon."

According to Rein's post, here are the steps needed to transfer and play the new user-created content:

1. Unzip the file to the root directory of any memory card that is readable by your PlayStation 3. It is already in the proper directory structure but, just in case, the path and filename need to be: ps3savedatalus30086-modimportuserdata.jam
2. Boot up Unreal Tournament 3 on your PS3
3. Go to the "Community" menu
4. Choose "My Content"
5. Press the [SQUARE] button to "Import Mod"
6. Follow the directions on the screen to import it from your memory device.

Once imported you'll be able to see the map in your list of Deathmatch maps. You'll be able to host the map and join servers that are hosting the map. All UT3 mods install this same way. If this were a mutator it would show up in the mutator list. If it were a gametype it would show up in gametype lists, etc.

Today, Epic announced three more maps and a mutator: DM-Elevation by Warby, VCTF-Slax by Kantham, DM-Krodan by Hourences, and VASUT3AutoShields (mutator) by KalCorp.

Sony Corp. announced a revised PlayStation 3 console Monday with a bigger hard drive for storing downloaded content such as video games and high-definition movies.

The new $599 PS3 increases the system's storage capacity from 60 to 80 gigabytes and also includes a retail copy of the online racing title ``MotorStorm,'' a company spokesman said.

Starting Monday, the current 60 gigabyte model will cost $499 _ a $100 price drop.

The larger capacity machine won't be available in the United States and Canada until August.

It plays into the company's upcoming strategy of eventually offering downloaded high-definition movies, video games, movie trailers and demos, Sony spokesman David Karraker said.

Karraker said further details on high-def movies for download would be released at a later date.

The announcement comes two days before the E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica, Calif., where dozens of industry heavyweights including Sony rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. are expected to show off their latest games and related products.

Sony hits brakes on Gran Turismo HD

Last week, Gran Turismo fans might have been concerned by a change in an online retailer's product listing for the series' PlayStation 3 debut. Instead of the winter 2006 date Sony had originally pegged for the title, GameStop was listing Gran Turismo HD as releasing December 1, 2007.

Sony today updated the game's Japanese Web site with some good news and some bad news for eager fans of the game. The good news is that a free demo version of Gran Turismo HD with 10 cars and two layouts of a single track will be available for download in Japan from the PlayStation store on December 24, 2006. The bad news is that the full version of the game has been canceled, as the Polyphony Digital team is switching its focus to the next PS3 installment of the series, Gran Turismo 5.

"The Gran Turismo series will change its core principles," Polyphony Digital head Kazunori Yamauchi said about the next installment in the series, which was not given any kind of release window. As for what direction Yamauchi is taking with the series, Sony has only said it "will be a fully realized Online Car Life Simulation."

Back in August, Yamauchi confirmed in an interview with Famitsu that development on the next PS3 version of Gran Turismo had begun. "We are working on a version of GT that supports the full PS3 specification," he told the magazine.

Gran Turismo HD may not be the last downloadable demo edition of the popular racing sim. The Japanese Gran Turismo site says that Sony might be able to offer more "concept" versions of the series before the full release of Gran Turismo 5 arrives. However, any such editions would be included in the final retail release of Gran Turismo 5.

While the free downloadable demo of Gran Turismo HD was confirmed for Japan, it's currently unclear if it will make its way to the US. When asked for a status update on the game's domestic fate, a Sony rep said only, "As of today, there are no official announcements for a North American release of GT HD."

Electronic Arts has pledged strong support for Sony's PlayStation 3 by revealing it has over 30 titles currently in development for the next-generation system.

The world's largest third-party publisher hopes to release between eight and ten titles by the end of March 2007, including franchise favourites Need for Speed Carbon, Fight Night and the recently announced Def Jam: Icon.

"Each game has been custom designed to leverage the hardware power of the PlayStation 3 and serve as a launch pad for EA's next generation of HD gaming," said Paul Lee, president of EA Studios.

"This is only the beginning. In the months and years to come, developers will take greater advantage of the PlayStation 3's Cell processors and Blu-ray storage capacity to create games of stunning depth and texture," he added.

Titles already in development include new IP Army of Two and Skate, as well as Burnout 5, Battlefield: Bad Company, Medal of Honor: Airborne and yearly updates for EA's key sporting franchises.

"EA's games on the PlayStation 3 will help propel HD forward," said Frank Gibeau, executive vice president of publishing in North America.

"Over the course of the next 18 months, EA will roll out groundbreaking new original properties and spectacular new versions of perennial hits that will further maximize the power of the PlayStation 3's unique cell processor and outstanding blu-ray disk capacity."

Sony Online Entertainment has signed a new agreement with Epic Games to license the Unreal Engine 3.

The engine will be used to develop some of SOE's next-gen console and PC games, including the DC Comics title that's currently in development.

According to SOE president John Smedley, the company's dev teams are "very excited" about the whole thing. "The combination of a top-notch graphics engine and a robust set of design tools will enable our teams to deliver incredible and innovative game content," he added.

Epic Games president Mark Rein commented: "Sony Online Entertainment has a reputation for delivering detailed, truly engaging, interactive online worlds. It is a great privilege for us that they’re using Unreal Engine 3 to help create their next generation projects."

SOE is by no means the first company to license UE3 - Epic already has deals in place with the likes of THQ, BioWare, Midway, Atari and Buena Vista Games, to name but a few.

Cipher Complex for PS3, X360

Texan developer Edge of Reality is working on a brand new military combat game for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Apparently the new game, titled Cipher Complex, offers an "intense, cinematic" experience "that will deliver a brutal shot of adrenaline straight to the hearts of next-generation games."

It's an original IP, you see, which EoR president Binu Philip reckons is just what the gaming world needs.

"The evolution of action games has seemed to plateau, perhaps because of the emphasis on sequels," Philip said.

"We are exploring and developing brand new styles of gameplay and methods of storytelling. The concept and mechanics of Cipher Complex have been incubating in our mind for years, and with power of the next-gen consoles, we can finally make our dream project a reality."

The storyline of Cipher Complex kicks off when a recon satellite is mysteriously blasted from orbit. Diplomatic requests for an explanation go unanswered, and the US government calls in Operative John Cipher to sort it all out. As Cipher, it's your job to go behind enemy lines and find out the truth - using any means necessary. I.e. guns, most probably.

It's all a bit of a departure for EoR, which is more used to producing movie tie-ins like Shark Tale and Over the Hedge. They also did Pitfall: The Lost Expedition, and cancelled Snoop Doggy Dogg game Fear & Respect.

Cipher Complex is out next year.
