Classic Game Characters in Spore

I came accross this over at 1up.com. Apparently Pacman and other videogame characters are inspiring Spore creature makers.

Spore, the next and arguably most ambitious project from Sims mastermind Will Wright, has a sneak preview of sorts with the recently-released Spore Creature Creator. Although only one piece of the total Spore experience, players have quickly taken to creating their own cuddly creatures, creepy crawlies, and abominations. Aside from penisaurs, the first thought to a lot of gamers was to pay homage to their favorite games and franchises with their creations.

Nintendo had 30 Wii Wheel prototypes

Get some plastic, shape it into a circle, cut out a slot for the Wii Remote, and bam, out comes a Wii Wheel. As it would turn out, Nintendo's driving peripheral that will be integral to Mario Kart Wii required a bit more thought to get just right. Actually, a lot more thought. In Nintendo's most recent "Ask Iwata" developer interview, Wii Wheel lead designer Kenichiro Ashida explains that the device went through around 30 iterations before finalization.

Wii Wheels's seen here

"While we were making prototypes like these, we went through a process of trial and error," explained Ashida. "With regard to weight, we thought carefully about how many grams would best suit gameplay. When considering durability, we wanted to make something strong using thick materials, but increasing the weight by even 30 grams would have been considered too heavy for some people. We eventually designed it to be as light as possible so people could use it for a long time without getting tired too quickly."

Weight and durability weren't the only factors Ashida and his team grappled with in the wheels design. Concerns spanned from where it would be best to house the wheel to how to best accommodate button positioning to whether the shape should be circular or rectangular.

Miyamoto, who was also party to the "Ask Iwata" interview, succinctly summarized Ashida's process, saying, "It costs a lot, so we needed it to do a lot of work!"

Wii online capabilities suffer another 300% knock-out

GoNintendo has posted the following official statement from Nintendo regarding the online problems with Brawl:

"As with the launch of any online-enabled game, especially one as popular as Super Smash Bros. Brawl, everyone wants to play at once. This puts a strain on the pipeline. We have seen improvements in online play performance every day since launch."

So Nintendo's solution seems to be, "Less people should play our game." And if the online problems persist, that will almost certainly be the case. Brilliant.

HD DVD dropped by Wal-Mart, Toshiba?

It's been a rough year for Toshiba's HD DVD format. After spending 2006 and 2007 locked in a heated battle with the Sony-backed Blu-ray for high-definition, high-capacity disc format dominance, HD DVD has suffered a series of devastating setbacks in the first two months of the year.

Warner Bros. kicked 2008 off by going Blu-ray exclusive in the first week of January. An apparently panicked HD DVD camp canceled its Consumer Electronics Show conference in response, and reports quickly surfaced that HD DVD holdouts Paramount and Universal were looking to switch to Blu-ray.

Bad news for HD DVD fans is continuing to snowball this week, as Best Buy and movie rental service Netflix both said they would back the Sony-supported format going forward. (Best Buy will still stock HD DVD, but its salespeople will advise prospective customers to go Blu-ray).

Two more big names came up as abandoning HD DVD today. This morning the official Wal-Mart blog confirmed that the massive retail chain is going Blu-ray exclusive by June, and the Hollywood Reporter is citing "reliable industry sources" for the news that Toshiba itself is ready to drop its own format.

A Toshiba representative denied the news to the film-focused trade newspaper, but left plenty of room for people to infer there is some truth to the report.

"Given the market developments in the past month," the rep is quoted as saying, "Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of our recent price reductions on all HD DVD players."

A source "close to the HD-DVD camp" told the paper that an announcement could be made in a matter of weeks, but that it is definitely coming soon.

First UT3 User Mods Released For PS3

Epic Games has released its first round of user-created content for the PlayStation 3 version of Unreal Tournament 3.

The multiplayer map called DM-Shrine, created by Nottingham, England, resident Thomas Browett (aka Setheran) can be downloaded onto a PC, copied onto a PS3-readable memory device and uploaded to your system.

The map was originally created for the PC version of the game and "cooked" by Epic for the PS3. According to Epic president Mark Rein, who posted the announcement on the Epic forums last night, the company hasn't edited the content but simply reformatted the code to run on the console.

"We're waiting on some paperwork from Sony that will allow us to release an editor update so mod creators can do this cook process for themselves," Rein said. "We expect to have that very soon."

According to Rein's post, here are the steps needed to transfer and play the new user-created content:

1. Unzip the file to the root directory of any memory card that is readable by your PlayStation 3. It is already in the proper directory structure but, just in case, the path and filename need to be: ps3savedatalus30086-modimportuserdata.jam
2. Boot up Unreal Tournament 3 on your PS3
3. Go to the "Community" menu
4. Choose "My Content"
5. Press the [SQUARE] button to "Import Mod"
6. Follow the directions on the screen to import it from your memory device.

Once imported you'll be able to see the map in your list of Deathmatch maps. You'll be able to host the map and join servers that are hosting the map. All UT3 mods install this same way. If this were a mutator it would show up in the mutator list. If it were a gametype it would show up in gametype lists, etc.

Today, Epic announced three more maps and a mutator: DM-Elevation by Warby, VCTF-Slax by Kantham, DM-Krodan by Hourences, and VASUT3AutoShields (mutator) by KalCorp.

Nintendo rules out Wii price cut, unveils game-gifting

Two weeks ago, Nintendo of America's outgoing senior vice president George Harrison said his company wasn't planning to cut the price of the Wii. The news wasn't surprising, since NOA president and CEO Reggie Fils-Aime previously promised the console would be in short supply through next year. However, since both executives' statements, the next-gen console war has heated up. Last week, Sony unveiled a new $399 PlayStation 3 and Microsoft touted the $279 Xbox Live Arcade as a direct Wii competitor.

Will Nintendo retaliate by cutting the price of the Wii? The short answer: No. In Japan, Nintendo Co. president Satoru Iwata told the Associated Press that the console's cost will remain unchanged in all territories. "We're still focusing on how to meet booming demand," he explained. "We're absolutely not considering a price cut."

Though Iwata's comments weren't exactly shocking, Nintendo did have one surprise up its sleeve. Also today in Japan, the company unveiled a new channel for its console which will allow Wii owners to give Virtual Console games to one another as gifts.

"We think this will be a breakthrough in encouraging customers to spread news of fun games via word of mouth," Iwata told the AP. "We also hope to spur more users to connect their Wiis to the Internet." Such statements stand in stark contrast to Iwata's position during the GameCube era, where he said that consumers were averse to consoles with online functionalities.

Unfortunately, no further information on the Wii game-gift channel was available as of press time. Nintendo of America reps said they had no further details, but urged Nintendo fans to "stay tuned."

PS3 price cut, new bundle announced

Sony Corp. announced a revised PlayStation 3 console Monday with a bigger hard drive for storing downloaded content such as video games and high-definition movies.

The new $599 PS3 increases the system's storage capacity from 60 to 80 gigabytes and also includes a retail copy of the online racing title ``MotorStorm,'' a company spokesman said.

Starting Monday, the current 60 gigabyte model will cost $499 _ a $100 price drop.

The larger capacity machine won't be available in the United States and Canada until August.

It plays into the company's upcoming strategy of eventually offering downloaded high-definition movies, video games, movie trailers and demos, Sony spokesman David Karraker said.

Karraker said further details on high-def movies for download would be released at a later date.

The announcement comes two days before the E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica, Calif., where dozens of industry heavyweights including Sony rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. are expected to show off their latest games and related products.
